PISCATAWAY, NJ - Loyola topped Rutgers, 1-0, in women's soccer action Friday night at Yurcak Field. The Scarlet Knights were ranked fifth in the Mid-Atlantic this week by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and have also been receiving votes in the Top 20 in the nation. The Greyhounds improve to 2-6 on the season while Rutgers falls to 5-3-1.
Loyola jumped out to an early lead less than 10 minutes into the match, as Carolyn Kennington broke away behind the defense, sending a shot across the box that ricocheted off the far post and into the goal.
Rutgers did their best to keep the Loyola defense on their toes, recording 17 shots to the Greyhounds five but the Loyola defense as well as keeper Kate Gilfillan prevailed for the win.
The Scarlet Knights'did have chance to score the equalizer in the 59th minute when sophomore Danae Risoli sent a corner kick into the box which junior Carli Lloyd headed to goal, but Gilfillan was there to make the save.
Gilfillan recorded a career-high eight saves in her second start for Loyola.
Loyola will now begin its Metro Atlantic Conference schedule by hosting Siena on Friday, Oct. 3 at 1:00.
