RICHMOND, Va. - Loyola College's Theresa Ferraina scored two goals, as the Greyhounds defeated host University of Richmond, 3-0, in a non-conference match on Sunday afternoon.
Christina Gomez put the Greyhounds (2-4-1) on the board in the 24th minute. Lina Staropoli's shot rebounded off Richmond goalkeeper Kate Hudson; Gomez corralled the loose ball and found the back of the net.
Ferraina added to Loyola's lead in the 67th minute. She took a pass from Staropoli and scored from eight yards out on the left side.
The Long Branch, N.J., native added an insurance goal in the 86th minute. She took volleyed a shot past Spiders goalkeeper Lora Gess, off an assist by Gomez, for the first multi-goal game of her career.
Staropoli finished with two assists, while Gomez recorded a goal and an assist.
The Spiders (1-6-1) managed 18 shots to Loyola's 13, but only nine of Richmond's shots were on goal.
Brittany Henderson made eight saves, including one on a penalty shot by Richmond's Susan Boyer six seconds before halftime. Amanda Piccirilli played the final minutes in goal for Loyola and made one save.
The Greyhounds remain on the road for a match on Friday, September 28, in Orlando at the University of Central Florida. The game starts at 7 p.m.
