Piscataway, N.J. - After playing to a scoreless draw in regulation, Rutgers Courtney Roarty's scored a goal two minutes into over time to give the Scarlet Knights a 1-0 victory over Loyola Tuesday night at Yurcak Field. Rutgers improves to 3-4 with the Greyhounds fall to 4-4.
Rutgers had two chances to score midway through the first half. Nina Montero moved through the left side of the box, drawing out Greyhound goalkeeper Amanda Piccirilli, and slid the ball to Kristen Edmonds in the middle of the six. Edmonds had an opportunity, but two Loyola defenders were waiting on the goal line, and cleared the ball to save the goal. Then, just 90 seconds later, Edmonds was just onsides as she ran onto a ball 30 yards from the goal. Amanda Piccirilli charged out of her goal, and Edmonds just missed an empty net with a long, looping shot.
Loyola had the best opportunity of the second half on a corner kick by Naomi Daniels in the 57th minute, but a Rutgers defender cleared the ball off the goal line to keep the match scoreless.
Two minutes into the overtime, Edmonds struck a solid shot from the right side of the box, and Piccirilli knocked it down. But Roarty was waiting for the deflection, and she struck into the goal for the gamewinner in the 93rd minute.
Piccirilli recorded two saves in goal while Rutgers goalie Nora Crawford stopped two as well.
The Greyhounds start conference play this weekend, traveling to Niagara on Friday, September 23.
