COLORADO SPRINGS - Ashley Bares scored two goals in the second half to break a 1-1 tie and lead No. 25 Marquette University to a 3-1 win over Loyola College on Friday afternoon at the Colorado College Invitational.
The Golden Eagles (6-0) took the lead in the 29th minute, as Christy Zwolski scored off an assist by Anna Sawicki.
Loyola (1-3-1), however, tied the game just before halftime. Lina Staropoli took a corner kick, and Heather Cooke finished it for her first goal of the season, the second of her career. Staropoli's assist was the first of her career.
The 1-1 tie would not last long, as Marquette broke the deadlock 2:42 into the second half.
Bares scored the first of her two goals in the 48th minute, then scored her second unassisted tally in the 77th minute.
Marquette, which had not allowed a goal in its first five matches of the season, outshot the Greyhounds 21-9. Loyola goalkeeper Brittany Henderson made 12 saves, while Laura Boyer made two for the Golden Eagles.
Loyola finishes action at the tournament with a 1:30 p.m. (MDT) game on Sunday, September 16, against the host Tigers. Colorado College (2-2-1) dropped a 2-1 decision this evening to the University of Rhode Island.
