SAINT DAVIDS, Pa. - Three Loyola women's soccer players scored goals, and the Greyhounds battled San Diego State to a 3-3 tie on Sunday afternoon at the Villanova Classic.
After being outshot, 13-9 in regulation, Loyola went on the attack in the first overtime period, outshooting the Aztecs, 4-2, putting three of their shots on goal.
"We were more aggressive and energetic in overtime than even early in the game, which was a great sign for us," Head Coach Katherine Vettori said. "We had some very good opportunities that just didn't go in, but I was pleased with the amount of pressure we were able to put on them."
Theresa Ferraina was named to the All-Tournament Team at the classic after scoring a goal and adding an assist against the Aztecs (2-2-1). She was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Sarra Moller and Brittany Henderson.
Ferraina put the Greyhounds (0-3-1) on the scoreboard in the first two minutes of the game.
Lea Day fed her a pass on the goal line, and Ferraina drove the ball into the left corner of the goal to give Loyola a 1-0 advantage just 66 seconds into the match.
"Lea did a great job of attacking the ball," Vettori said. "She really got that play started and then gave `T' a great pass, and `T' first timed the ball."
San Diego State, however, would respond, as Jessica Gordon scored the first of her two goals exactly 10 minutes later. Heather Vandeanter gave Gordon a pass from the right side, and Gordon put in a shot from the middle of the box.
The Aztecs took their first lead of the game less than two minutes later, as Cat Walker struck a hard shot into the upper right corner of the goal at the 12:05 mark.
Loyola tied the match at 2-2 shortly thereafter.
Ferraina played a corner kick from the left side, and Rachel Shuck scored her first goal of the season by blasting the ball past Aztecs goalkeeper Aubree Southwick in the 22nd minute.
After coming out of halftime tied, 2-2, Kelly Farrell put Loyola on top by a goal, 3-2. Lina Staropoli took a direct kick from 22 yards out that was saved by San Diego State goalkeeper Christi Yount. Farrell collected the rebound and scored the go-ahead goal.
Loyola's lead would be short-lived, however, as Gordon scored her second of the game off assists by Taylor Canatsey and Alicia Piz.
Brittany Henderson made seven saves in goal for Loyola, while Southwich and Yount combined to make four for the Aztecs.
The Greyhounds return to Diane Geppi-Aikens Field for their second home match of the season on Friday, September 12, at 4:30 p.m. against Virginia Commonwealth.
