BATON ROUGE, LA - Freshman Carolyn Kennington and junior Ellen Sroka each score two goals as Loyola earned its first victory of the 2003 season in a 5-0 defeat of McNeese State Friday at LSU's Tiger Classic. The Greyhounds improve to 1-2 overall while McNeese State falls to 0-2.
The two teams held each other scoreless in the first 45 minutes of play but Kennington got the 'Hounds on the board early on in the second half with her unassisted goal at 51:35. It was Kennington's second goal of the season and her career.
"We kept our patience in the first half and that gave us the ability to get a few balls into the goal in the second," head coach Joe Mallia said of the win.
The Greyhounds earned control of the game almost 20 minutes later when Kennington added her second goal, this time assisted by junior Jeannetta McGettigan at 72:32. Loyola continued to post goals, scoring three more over the next 11 minutes of play.
Senior tri-captain Katie Elliott was next up with her goal at 76:23 from Sroka. Sroka would score the final two goals of the game at 81:19 and 83:38 respectively. Leigh Ann Mastrini was credited with the assist on Sroka's first goal.
Loyola outshot the Cowgirls 23-3 while goalkeeper Erica Niemann made two saves in the shutout. McNeese State's keeper, Toni Deason stopped 12 shots in Friday's contest.
"Today's win was a great result for our program and I'm looking forward to what's going to be a great game against the Tigers on Sunday," Mallia said.
