Schmitt, Thomas and VanThof Named Team Captains

Nov. 20, 2014

BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland head women’s lacrosse coach Jen Adams announced Thursday that seniors Hannah Schmitt, Sydney Thomas and Taryn VanThof will serve as team captains for the 2015 season.

“I am extremely proud to announce our team captains for this year,” Adams said. “Hannah, Sydney and Taryn are incredible examples of what it means to be a leader; they have really earned the respect of both their peers and coaches. The diversity they bring within their leadership strengths and styles, in addition to their personalities, makes this group an exciting combination. Together, they are one of the most inspirational captain trios I have had the opportunity to coach. I am confident that they will pave the way, both on and off the field, for a successful and rewarding season.”

Schmitt, a native of Malvern, Pennsylvania, was recently named the first-ever recipient of the Diane Geppi-Aikens Endowed Scholarship, an honor that will be presented annually to a rising senior on the women’s lacrosse team who shares the values, characteristics and traits that Geppi-Aikens did for family, competitiveness, advocacy for sports and lacrosse, and toughness. A three-time all-conference honoree, Schmitt was named to the All-Patriot League First Team last year after picking up a pair of BIG EAST honors in 2012 and 2013. The attacker has started all but one game throughout her career and became the 23rd Greyhound in program history to reach the 100-career goals plateau at Boston University on April 12, 2014. She enters her final season with 114 career goals, 25 assists, 139 points and 51 ground balls.

Thomas, a mainstay in the Greyhounds’ lineup the past three seasons, has consistently contributed on both ends of the field to become just the 11th player in program history with 50 goals, 50 assists and 50 ground balls. The midfielder from Medina, Ohio finished last year with 18 goals, 13 assists and 31 points to notch her 100th career point, while she also added 22 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers throughout the season. An All-BIG EAST First Team honoree in 2012, Thomas has contributed 55 goals, 52 assists, 107 points, 82 ground balls, 45 draw controls and 29 caused turnovers throughout her career.

VanThof, also a team captain last year, is a redshirt senior who recently became the first Greyhound since 2007 to be selected to the prestigious 36-member Team USA roster. A two-time All-American, VanThof is coming off a season where she dominated the draw control. The native of Livonia, New York broke the Patriot League and Loyola single-game records when she won 15 at Lafayette on March 15, before tying them again at Boston University on April 12. She also broke the program’s single season and career records, finishing the year with 122 and 227, respectively. Contributing a point in the last 30-straight games, VanThof will bring 78 career goals, 29 assists 107 points, 90 ground balls and 62 caused turnovers into her final season.

The Greyhounds will begin their 2015 season on Saturday, Feb. 21 at Princeton.
