Seniors Cara Filippelli and Abby Rehfuss and junior Kerry Stoothoff will lead the Loyola University Maryland women’s lacrosse team as captains for the 2011 season, Head Coach Jen Adams announced today.
“We are excited to announce Abby Rehfuss, Cara Filippelli, and Kerry Stoothoff as our captains for this year,” said Adams. “They are not only high caliber players, but together they bring a level of energy, passion, and confidence to lead this team. Together this group knows what it takes to lead and inspire our 2011 team.”
The three were selected by Loyola players and coaches after a several weeks of fall practice and scrimmages.
Filippelli and Rehfuss will serve as captains for the second straight year, while Stoothoff will wear the honor for the first time.
“Abby and Cara are returning as captains from 2010 having gained a valuable year of experience and growth,” Adams said. “Kerry is a great addition to our leadership group and her impact is impressive both on and off the field.”
Filippelli (Devon, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) earned 2010 Second-Team All-BIG EAST honors last year after scoring a career-high 23 goals and notching 28 assists. Filippelli recorded eight multi-goal games and 11 multi-point games, including a hat-trick effort in an upset of then-No. 10 Virginia. The senior will enter the season ranking fifth all-time at Loyola with 70 career caused turnovers after causing 19 last season.

Rehfuss proved strong on both sides of the ball, notching 30 goals and seven assists while finishing second on the team with 41 ground balls and third with 24 caused turnovers. She also led the team with 48 draw controls, tied for fifth-most in a season in Loyola history and placing Rehfuss fifth all-time in that category at Loyola.
Stoothoff (Blue Point, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) was named the team’s Most Valuable Player last year after a season that saw the goalkeeper rank third in the BIG EAST in goals-against-average ( 9.47) and save percentage (.497).
