Sept. 20, 2008
BALTIMORE - A crowd of 626 runners and walkers, and many more came to cheer them on, descended on the Loyola College campus early on Saturday, September 20, in memory of a woman who touched thousands of lives, not only in the lacrosse world, but throughout all communities.
The 6th-Annual Diane Geppi-Aikens Memorial 5k Race and 1-Mile Fun Walk was held on the College's campus in honor of the Loyola women's lacrosse coach who passed away in 2003 after a brave battle with brain cancer.
In addition to many local road runners, family and friends of Geppi-Aikens, and Loyola athletics teams, women's lacrosse teams from Loyola, Maryland, Johns Hopkins and Towson all ran or walked at the event.
Prior to the event, a group of Loyola women's lacrosse alumni - Suzanne Eyler, Marianne Gioffre, Kristi Korrow, Jen Schuerzholz and Tara Singleton - spoke to the current team about Geppi-AIkens and the impact she had on each of their lives.
The event supports the Aikens Children's Trust and is held annually on the third Saturday in September.
