BALTIMORE - The Loyola University Maryland women’s lacrosse team will depart for its international trip to London, England and Cape Town, South Africa on Friday, May 30. The trip, which was made possible through external fundraising efforts, will send the Greyhounds to London for four days and Cape Town for seven days.
While in London, the Greyhounds will not only face the England and Wales National Teams, but they will host clinics with local players and visit the Westminster Abbey, the London Eye and take a boat trip on the Thames to the Tower of London.
The second half of the trip will be in South Africa, which will feature exhibition games and clinics with South African girls, in addition to various tourist activities. The Greyhounds will visit Table Mountain and Robben Island, where ex-prisoners and activists under apartheid will give an educational tour of the location where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned. They will walk the Penguin Boardwalk, head to the Fisantekraal Informal Settlement and enjoy an excursion to Buffelsfontein Game & Nature Reserve, where they will see game such as Lions, Cheetahs, Buffalo, Giraffes, Zebras, Blue Wildebeests, Red Hartebeest, Kudu, Eland, Oryx (Gemsbok), Bontebok, Springbox, Duiker, Steenbox and Caracal.
A full day is planned for both Cape Point Excursion on Hout Bay (Seal Island, Circe Launches, Cape Point Nature Reserve and Boulders Penguins) and the Winelands, where the group will tour a region known for its breathtaking scenery.
The final day will bring an opportunity for great white shark cage diving or some shopping at local arts and crafts markets before the Greyhounds head to the airport to begin their journey home.
Loyola worked with ZagLax to coordinate the trip. “Zag” by most definitions is defined as a sudden change of direction. Zag Sports hopes its international sports experiences and adventures provide teams, youth and their families a change of direction or “Zag” in their life. They believe travel is a wonderful educational tool and their experiences are carefully designed to allow student-athletes to stretch themselves, whether its on the field of play, through adventure activities, through cultural interaction or through volunteer experiences.
To follow the Greyhounds’ adventures, a Facebook group specific to the trip has been created, while updates will also be posted to the Loyola Women's Lacrosse Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages, in addition to LoyolaGreyhounds.com, throughout the entire trip.
