Burke Named PL Scholar-Athlete Of The Year; Mathis To Academic Team

April 22, 2015

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Loyola University Maryland senior Kara Burke has been named the Corvias Patriot League Women's Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while sophomore Bailey Mathis has been named to the Academic All-Patriot League Team, as announced by the league office Wednesday.

Burke and Mathis were two of nine all-conference honorees on the 12-member all-academic team, while Loyola, Colgate, Holy Cross and Lehigh each had two student-athletes honored for their work in the classroom and on the field.

Burke, a business administration major carrying a 3.539 grade-point average and a 3.8 GPA within her major, has had a career year for the Greyhounds this season. A three-time Corvias Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week, Burke picked up her first all-conference honor this year, a second-team nod, after leading the team in goals, with 43. In addition, Burke ranks second on the team with 56 points, both totals that rank third in the Patriot League. She also leads the league in conference only games in goals, scoring 27, while she's second to teammate Annie Thomas in points (34).

Earlier this season, the Timonium, Maryland native recorded her 100th career goal to become the 25th Greyhound in program history to reach the milestone. In playing 72 career games, Burke has 112 goals, 25 assists and 137 points. She also has 41 ground balls, 39 draw controls and 15 caused turnovers.

Mathis has been a workhorse this season. A defensive-minded midfielder from Lake Worth, Florida, Mathis is second on the team with 24 draw controls, while she also has three goals, nine ground balls and nine caused turnovers. A psychology major with a 3.892 grade-point average, she scored her first career goal earlier this season against Lafayette and was named to the All-Patriot League second team for her play defensively.

The Greyhounds, the Patriot League regular-season champions, will begin their quest for a second-straight conference title on Friday when they host Boston University in the semifinals of the league tournament. Opening draw is slated for 5 p.m., at Ridley Athletic Complex.
