Schmitt Named National Player Of The Week

April 15, 2013

BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland sophomore Hannah Schmitt has been selected as the National Player of the Week, it was announced Monday.

Schmitt buried the game-winning goal to lift the 17th-ranked Greyhounds to an upset win over previously undefeated and sixth-ranked Notre Dame in double overtime Friday night.

The Malvern, Pa., native scored Loyola's final two goals in regulation, including the game's final goal at 4:12, to secure overtime. She then assisted classmate Kara Burke's game-tying goal in the first half of the overtime period after Notre Dame had taken the lead, before tallying the game-winning goal in sudden-death overtime.

Schmitt finished the game with a season-high five points on three goals and two assists. So far this season, Schmitt leads the team with 24 goals and is second with 29 points.

This marks the first weekly honor for Schmitt this year, while it is the second time she has earned an accolade from throughout her career. She was named the Rookie of the Week on April 2 last year.

The Greyhounds will be back in action on Friday when they head to Villanova for a 4 p.m. contest. Loyola will then close out its road portion of the regular season, traveling to Rutgers for a game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
