BALTIMORE - Freshman Annie Thomas has been named the WomensLax.com Rookie of the Week after scoring the game-winning goal in overtime in the Loyola University Maryland women’s lacrosse team’s BIG EAST opener at No. 13 Georgetown on Saturday.
With just 37 seconds remaining in overtime, the Bel Air, Md., native cut from behind the crease and came up big for the Greyhounds, slipping a low shot past Georgetown goalie Barb Black to put Loyola up, 15-14. The Hoyas won the ensuing draw control, but were unable to convert on their scoring opportunity as senior goalkeeper Kerry Stoothoff (Blue Point, N.Y.) turned back the shot and ran out the clock to preserve the road win. The victory marked the first for the Greyhounds over Georgetown in D.C. since 1979.
For the game, Thomas tying a career-high four points with two goals and two assists. She also added one ground ball and one draw control en route to being named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll this week.
Thomas leads the Greyhounds with 12 assists this season, ranking fifth in Loyola’s all-time freshman records. Janet Eisenhut holds the freshman record for assists with 19 in 1980.
In addition, Thomas is one of six freshmen to score for the Greyhounds this season and is the second to be named a WomensLax.com Rookie of the Week. Classmate Sydney Thomas was honored on March 12.
Loyola will return to action this weekend when it hosts Cincinnati (Friday, 7 p.m.) and No. 6 Notre Dame (Sunday, 1 p.m.).
