Gavin, Stoothoff Earn BIG EAST Weekly Awards

Providence, R.I. - Loyola senior midfielder Grace Gavin (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls HS) and junior goalkeeper Kerry Stoothoff (Blue Point, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point HS) have been named the BIG EAST Conference's Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week it was announced today by the conference office. This is the first time this season that the No. 6/5 Greyhounds have swept the weekly awards.

Stoothoff collected her third Defensive Player of the Week award in four weeks after leading the Greyhounds to a sweep of a pair of home games last week. In a 10-7 win over Penn State, she collected seven saves and three ground balls with one caused turnover. In the 14-8 victory over Cornell, she increased all three categories with eight saves, five ground balls two caused turnovers. She is unbeaten in four starts and previously won awards following the first and third weeks of the season.

Gavin tied career-highs with seven goals and eight points to lead Loyola to the win over the Big Red. She collected three goals and an assist in the victory over the Nittany Lions to finish with 12 points in the two games. For the week, she recorded four draw controls, three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Loyola's leading scorer, she has tallied 15 goals while adding four assists for 19 points to lead all scorers in the BIG EAST. Last week, she was named to the conference's honor roll for her first acknowledgement of the season.

Loyola (4-0) moved up one spot in the deBeer media poll announced Monday to No. 5 . An announcement on the coaches poll is expected later in the day. The Greyhounds (4-0) return to action Wednesday when they travel to Delaware to play the Blue Hens at 4 o'clock before hosting No. 10/9 James Madison on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at the Ridley Athletic Complex.
