BALTIMORE - The Loyola University Maryland women's lacrosse team collected another preseason accolade today, as the Greyhounds occupy the No. 12 spot in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse College Association Preseason Poll.
The ranking marks the highest preseason spot in the poll in six years, when the Greyhounds checked in at No. 9 in 2005. Loyola received 157 votes in this year's poll.
Loyola finished 2010 ranked at No. 13 after an 11-7 campaign that ended with a trip to the BIG EAST Semifinals.
Loyola is one of four BIG EAST schools to appear in the top 12. Syracuse (No. 5), Georgetown (No. 7), Notre Dame (No. 12) join the Greyhounds in the rankings from the league. Rutgers received votes but did not rank.
The Greyhounds face seven opponents appearing in the top 20 and five in the top 10 in 2011. No. 5 Syracuse (April 29), No. T-7 Georgetown (April 19), No. T-7 Virginia (February 19), No. 9 James Madison (March 19), No. 10 Notre Dame (April 3), No. 15 Towson (March 5), No. 16 Penn State (March 8) appear on Loyola's schedule this season. The Greyhounds also play Denver (March 27) and Rutgers (April 23), who receive votes in the poll.
Maryland led the rankings by taking 19 out of 20 first place votes and is one of five ACC schools ranked in the poll.
Northwestern takes the second spot, followed by North Carolina at No. 3, Duke at No. 4 and Syracuse at No. 5.
Loyola opens the season at the Ridley Athletic Complex on Saturday, Feb. 19 with a 12 p.m. contest against Virginia.
