PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Juniors Grace Gavin and Cara Filippelli have been named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team in a voting conducted by the league's nine head coaches, the conference announced today. In the same vote, Loyola was picked to finish fourth in the BIG EAST. Notre Dame's Gina Scioscia was named the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and Syracuse's Liz Hogan was named the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
A unanimous preseason all-conference selection, Gavin led the team in scoring the last two seasons, with 56 goals and 74 assists coming in 2009. Gavin earned First-Team All-BIG EAST and All-Region honors for her efforts as a sophomore in 2009.
Filippelli also was a First Team All-Conference and All-Region selection in 2009 after totaling 46 ground balls and 24 draw controls along with 20 points and 15 goals as a sophomore. The tri-captain also led a defense that caused 13.47 turnovers per game, which was tops in the NCAA in 2009. Her 39 caused turnovers (2.29 per game) led the team and was sixth in the country.
In a very tight vote, Georgetown, with four first place votes, was picked to win the conference, followed by Syracuse with three, Notre Dame with two and then the Greyhounds. Rounding out the poll was Louisville, Rutgers, Connecticut, Cincinnati and first-year member, Villanova.
Loyola, which has been ranked 14th in the Inside Lacrosse Preseason Poll, opens the 2010 season with a Valentine's Day matchup in Happy Valley with Penn State February 14 at 1:00 pm.
