BALTIMORE - The Loyola University Maryland women's lacrosse team will start the season ranked ninth nationally in the 2014 IWLCA Preseason Division I Coaches Poll, the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) announced Monday.
The Greyhounds have earned a top-10 ranking in each of the three national polls, checking in 10th in both Inside Lacrosse's Brine Media Poll and Lacrosse Magazine's Preseason Poll.
Loyola has been among the top-14 of the preseason poll in five of the six seasons head coach Jen Adams has been at the helm, while the Greyhounds are one of only six programs to be ranked among the top-10 nationally the last three years; Duke, Florida, Maryland, North Carolina and Northwestern are the others. The Greyhounds received votes in the 2009 poll, Adam’s first season, before checking in at No. 14 in 2010, No. 12 in 2011, No. 7 in 2012 and No. 6 last year.
The Greyhounds will face eight teams ranked in the top-20 of the coaches poll, including four ranked ahead of them. In addition, all three of Loyola's non-conference opponents that will visit Ridley Athletic Complex this season are nationally ranked.
The Greyhounds will open their season vs. No. 16 Princeton on Saturday, Feb. 22, while No. 5 Florida and No. 19 Towson will also visit Ridley this season. Loyola's inaugural Patriot League season will pit the Greyhounds vs. No. 18 Navy at home on Senior Day (Saturday, April 19).
Loyola will open its season at No. 8 Virginia on Saturday, Feb. 15 and will also travel to No. 7 Penn State and No. 10 Georgetown throughout the season. The Greyhounds will conclude their regular season following the Patriot League Championships, traveling to No. 3 Syracuse on Saturday, May 3.
