BALTIMORE - The Loyola University Maryland women's lacrosse team has earned a second top-10 preseason ranking, this time checking in at No. 9 in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association coaches poll, as released by the IWLCA Monday.
The Greyhounds were also selected ninth in the Nike/Lacrosse Magazine NCAA Division I women's lacrosse preseason rankings, which was compiled by Lacrosse Magazine staff after consultation with college coaches.
Coming off a Patriot League Championship in its first year in the league, Loyola was picked to defend its title this season. Senior Annie Thomas (offensive) and junior Maddy Lesher (defensive) were also picked to defend their conference player of the year honors, and were joined by seniors Hannah Schmitt and Taryn VanThof on the Preseason All-Patriot League Team.
Throughout the season, the Greyhounds will face seven teams ranked in the top-20 of the IWLCA Preseason Poll and two that are receiving votes. Loyola will open its season with a game at No. 15 Princeton on Saturday, Feb. 21, before returning to Baltimore to host No. 16 Johns Hopkins. The Greyhounds will also face James Madison (receiving votes), No. 4 Florida, No. 11 Penn State, No. 6 Virginia, No. 17 Georgetown and Towson (RV), respectively, before closing out their season hosting No. 3 Syracuse on Saturday, May 2.
