Women's Lacrosse Nabs BIG EAST Preseason Honors

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The BIG EAST named a record three Loyola University Maryland women's lacrosse players to its Preseason All-BIG EAST Team, Grace Gavin earned BIG EAST Preseason Offensive Player of the Year honors and a poll of the league's nine head coaches predicted the Greyhounds to finish fourth, the conference announced today.

Gavin, last year's BIG EAST Attack Player of the Year, joins captains Abby Rehfuss and Cara Filippelli on the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. The three selections mark the most Greyhounds to appear on the team since Loyola joined the conference in 2006.

Loyola earned 36 points and received one first-place vote to finish fourth in the BIG EAST preseason coaches' poll. Georgetown took top honors, followed by Syracuse and Notre Dame. The Greyhounds went 5-3 in league play last year to finish fourth.

Gavin makes her third appearance on the Preseason All-BIG EAST team, receiving a unanimous selection after scoring 64 goals and notching 23 assists to lead the Greyhounds in scoring for the third straight year.The senior earned a spot on the 2010 All-BIG EAST First Team after the conclusion of last season en route to IWLCA First Team All-Mid Atlantic Region and IWLCA Second-Team All-American honors.

Filippelli earns preseason All-BIG EAST laurels for the second consecutive year with this year's announcement. Filippelli potted a career-high 23 goals and tallied five assists last season and was named to the 2010 All-BIG EAST Second Team. The senior will also serve as one of the team's three captains in 2011 for the second year in a row.

Rehfuss rounds out the Greyhounds' representation on the league's preseason team, making her first career appearance on the squad. The second-year captain captured second team BIG EAST and IWLCA All-Mid Atlantic Region honors last year after notching 30 goals and seven assists while finishing second on the team with 41 ground balls and third with 24 caused turnovers.

Loyola opens the season at the Ridley Athletic Complex against Virginia on February 19 at 12 p.m.
