Baltimore, Md. - It seemed impossible but on Senior Day, anything is possible. The Loyola College women's lacrosse team scored two goals in the final 14 seconds of play to top Towson 13-12 on Tuesday afternoon on Diane Geppi-Aikens Field. Kate Filippelli scored the tying goal with 14 seconds left and Sydney Greene added the game winner with just two seconds on the clock. The Greyhounds improve to 7-7 on the season with their 25th straight win over the Tigers. Towson falls to 7-8 with the loss.
After a goal by each team in the first three minutes of play for the 1-1 score, neither teams defense allowed another goal for nearly 10 minutes. Shannon Witzel scored the initial Tiger tally while Greene scored the first for Loyola, assisted by Kate McHarg. After 11:48 of play Becky Trumbo gave the Tigers the lead, 2-1 with a free position goal. McHarg scored the next two goals, unassisted for the Greyhounds to return the lead to their favor, 3-2 after 24 minutes. The Tigers then went on a three-goal run to close the half with the lead, 5-3. Trumbo scored twice in that run while Hilary Fratzke added the third.
Brittany Woofield extended the Towson lead just one minute into the second half, 6-3 before the Greyhounds scored four unanswered goals. McHarg scored the first two unassisted while Alicyn Brunnett, assisted by Stephanie Walker, nabbed the second and Walker scored the fourth, assisted by Kristin McKay. With the run, Loyola claimed a 7-6 advantage after nearly 37 minutes of play.
The teams exchanged three goals each over the next 11 minutes to keep Loyola in the lead 10-9. Courtney Arnold scored twice for the Greyhounds, once assisted by Walker while Greene added the third of Loyola's goals. The Tigers goals in the exchange came from Meggie McNamara (two goals) and Fratzke.
Brunnett added to the Greyhound lead in the 53rd minute, off a pass from Arnold, for the 11-9 mark. But the Tigers didn't back down as the scored the next three goals, in just over a minute, to take the lead 12-11. Fratzke scored the first in the run to cut Loyola's lead to 11-10 on a fast break with just over three minutes to play. Witzel scored 15 seconds later to tie the game at 11 and just 29 seconds later Trumbo scored to take the lead.
With less than a minute and a half left, worked to get the ball on the offensive end. With 19 seconds left, the Towson defense committed a turnover, Filippelli snatched up a groundball and beat the keeper to tie the game at 12. Off the ensuing draw control, McHarg won the draw and quickly worked around to the left side of the field and passed off to Greene. Greene sprinted down field and with the seconds ticking off the clock, beat Towson keeper Mandy Corry high for the win.
McHarg ended the day with four goals and an assist. Greene scored three goals while Arnold and Brunnett each scored twice. Arnold also added an assist in her best game this season. Walker scored once while adding two assists. Filippelli scored once while McKay added one assist.
Trumbo scored four goals and added two assists. Fratzke scored three times while Witzel and McNamara each had two goals. Woodfield scored one goal.
Greyhound keeper Alex Piraino stopped 10 Towson shots while Corry was credited with 11 saves for Towson.
Tuesday's game was the final home game of the season and the final home game in the careers of Laura Carper, Sydney Greene, Cindy Nicolaus, Chrissy Nicolaus, Emilie Patterson, Kristin McKay, Katherine Sachs, Talia Shacklock and Stephanie Walker.
The Greyhounds close the regular season on Saturday, April 29 at BIG EAST opponent Georgetown.
