PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Grace Gavin scored the first four goals of the second half, and Loyola University Maryland scored 10 of the first 11 goals after halftime to defeat host Rutgers University, 15-6, in BIG EAST Conference action on Saturday afternoon.

The victory clinched a bid for the Greyhounds (13-1 overall, 5-1 BIG EAST) clinched a bid in the BIG EAST Women's Lacrosse Championships that will be held May 5-7 at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

Tied at 3-3 coming out of the locker room in the second half, Gavin gave Loyola the lead on a free-position shot with 27:57 remaining. She then scored on another two free-positions, at 24:49 and 23:56, and she added an unassisted tally with 22:01 on the clock to put Loyola in front, 7-3.

"We were flat coming out in the first half, but we had some nice goals by Grace to pick up the momentum in the second half," Head Coach Jen Adams said. "Those goals and then some nice defensive plays got things going for us. Kerry Stoothoff had an amazing game in goal for us, too."

Stoothoff made 14 saves, saving 70-percent of the Scarlet Knights' 20 shots on goal.

Katherine Marino broke Gavin's run with a Rutgers goal at 19:28, but Loyola's Taryn VanThof scored 2:25 later to start a 6-0 Greyhounds run that would see them take a 13-4 advantage with 4:01 to play when Joanna Dalton scored her second of three goals in the game.

Gavin followed VanThof goal with her fifth of the game, and VanThof scored unassisted again at 9:56 to make it 10-4 in Loyola's favor.

Cara Filippelli then scored off a Gavin assist 33 ticks later, and Dalton added goals at 4:34 and 4:01. Kristen Anderson tallied a free-position goal for the Scarlet Knights (8-6, 2-4), but Dalton and Ashley Cahill scored back-to-back goals for the Greyhounds at 2:02 and 0:32.

Meg Decker scored the game's first goal for Loyola off a Mary Heneberry assist, but Marino tied it at 1-1 on a free-position goal with 20:45 to play in the first.

Heneberry scored off a Caroline Hager assist at 15:23 to briefly give Loyola back the lead before Marlena Welsh scored twice to give the Scarlet Knights the advantage for the first, and only, time.

Again, it was Heneberry who tied it for Loyola with a goal at 8:17 that would be the last in the first half for either team.

The BIG EAST Championships bid is the second in a row for Loyola. Last year, the Greyhounds lost in the semifinals to Georgetown.

The Greyhounds finish the regular-season at home with a pair of games at Ridley Athletic Complex next weekend. Loyola hosts Syracuse at 7 o'clock on Friday and then entertains Connecticut on Senior Day at 1 o'clock on Sunday.
