LEWISBURG, Pa. - Nine Greyhounds scored as the Loyola University Maryland women's lacrosse team picked up a 13-7 win over Bucknell at Graham Field Wednesday night.
With the win, the Greyhounds capture at least a share of their third-straight Patriot League regular-season title and will host the semifinals and championship game of the upcoming League tournament at Ridley Athletic Complex. The semifinals are set for Friday, May 6, with the championship game on Sunday, May 8.
Redshirt freshman Sabrina Tabasso led all players with a personal-best five points against Bucknell, scoring two goals and adding three assists, while senior Maddy Blakeman had a game-high three goals. Freshman Hannah Powers tacked on two goals for Loyola (10-5 overall, 7-0 Patriot League), while senior Shannon Aikens, junior Emily Clark, sophomores Margaret Filippelli and Frankie Kamely, and freshmen Lindsay Gamer and Taylor VanThof had one goal each.
For Bucknell (10-5, 4-3), Emily Becker, Eve Lukowski and Maddy Molinari had two goals apiece.
Bucknell opened the game with back-to-back goals before Powers was able to get the Greyhounds on the board, finishing a pass from Savage, at 23:13.
The Bison answered with a goal at 21:23, but Loyola's defense settled down and held Bucknell without a goal for the remainder of the half, as the offense scattered four goals throughout the period. Tabasso had a hand in all four of those goals, assisting Kamely at 19:14, before evening the score at 3-3 with a goal at 18:53. She then assisted Powers at 4:36 and VanThof with 29.3 seconds remaining, getting Loyola a 5-3 halftime advantage.
To open the second half, senior Maddy Lesher caused her third turnover of the game to keep Bucknell off the board and become the fifth Greyhound in program history to cause 100 turnovers throughout their career.
At the other end of the field, Tabasso continued her hot streak, recording her personal-best fifth point by netting her second goal of the game at 23:55, assisted by Filippelli, to push Loyola ahead 6-3.
Blakeman and Clark both converted free position shots for the Greyhounds, before Bucknell was able to break through Loyola's defense at 14:03, scoring its first goal after being held scoreless for a span of 37:20.
Blakeman's second goal at 12:35 and Filippelli's free-position score at 11:48 put Loyola up 10-4, before the BIston netted an assisted goal at 9:40.
Gamer's goal, assisted by Kamely at 8:09, gave the Greyhounds an 11-5 lead before Blakeman completed her third hat trick of the season at 7:21.
Back-to-back goals from the Bison pulled Bucknell within five, 12-7, with 35.6 seconds to play, before Aikens concluded the scoring in the game with 29 seconds left.
Lesher led the defense with a game-high five caused turnovers, while freshman Kristen Yanchoris had three ground balls and two caused turnovers. In addition, junior Amy Abdalla added two ground balls and two caused turnovers, and junior Taylor O'Connell had three ground balls.
The Greyhounds remain in the road for a game at Lafayette on Saturday. The opening draw is scheduled for 3 p.m.
