BALTIMORE - No. 16 Georgetown University went on a 5-1 run that covered more than 14 minutes in the second half, and the Hoyas remained handed No. 6 Loyola University Maryland its first loss of the 2011 season, 15-13, on Tuesday night at Ridley Athletic Complex in BIG EAST Conference play.
Hannah Franklin scored on a free-position shot with 17:36 for the Hoyas (8-5 overall, 6-0 BIG EAST) to tie the game 11-11 and start the run.
Kelsi Bozel put Georgetown up at 12:26, and Jacqueline Giles gave the Hoyas a two-goal lead, 13-11, with 12:26 to play.
Grace Gavin scored one of her three goals at 11:28 to momentarily stem the tide for Loyola (12-1, 4-1), but Kathleen Dwyer and Franklin added Georgetown goals at 5:14 and 3:34, respectively, to add to the Hoyas' lead.
Meg Decker scored 3;23 for Loyola, but Georgetown held the Greyhounds scoreless from that point forward.
A back-and-forth first half saw neither team lead by more than two goals. Loyola went ahead, 3-1, on Abby Rehfuss' second goal of the game at 18:24, but Georgetown scored four in a row, capped by a Kirr goal, to take a 5-3 advantage with 11:23 before the break.
The teams traded goals 1-for-1 for the rest of the half. Decker scored with 2:23 for Loyola, sending the teams to the locker room with Georgetown ahead, 9-8.
The Hoyas' lead was short-lived, however, in the second half. Taryn VanThof won the opening draw of the second half, raced into the offensive zone and scored down the right alley, tying things up at 9-9 just nine ticks into the period.
Kirr used a Bozel assist at 26:13 to put Georgetown in front by a goal, but Decker scored on a VanThof assist, and VanThof scored her second of the game at 24:16 on a free-position shot to give Loyola the lead.
Neither team would score for nearly seven minutes until Franklin's goal ignited the Georgetown 5-1 run.
The Hoyas outshot Loyola, 32-22, and five Georgetown players - Sophia Thomas, Franklin, Dwyer, Kelyn Freedman and Kirr - each scored twice.
Gavin and Decker led Loyola with three each, while VanThof, Rehfuss and Mary Heneberry all scored twice.
The Greyhounds return to BIG EAST play on Saturday when they travel to Piscataway, N.J., to face Rutgers at 1 o'clock. Loyola returns to Ridley on Friday, April 29, to host Syracuse at 7 o'clock.
