BALTIMORE - With a 9-6 win over Boston University at Ridley Athletic Complex Saturday afternoon, the 17th-ranked Loyola University Maryland women's lacrosse team clinched a bye in the first round of the upcoming Patriot League Tournament.
Senior Kara Burke led the Greyhounds (11-4, 7-0 Patriot League) with a game-high five points on four goals and one assist, while classmate Annie Thomas added two goals. Seniors Molly Hulseman and Hannah Schmitt, in addition to redshirt sophomore Katrina Geiger, all tacked on one goal.
Boston University (6-7, 4-3) was led by Mallory Collins' four goals, while Carolina English and Jill Horka contributed one score each.
The Terriers became just the third team this season to score before the Greyhounds, netting a goal at the 26:17 mark.
Burke tallied back-to-back scores to get Loyola the 2-1 lead at 25:41, but Collins responded for Boston University, scoring twice, to put the Terriers back on top, 3-2, at 10:14.
Thomas sparked a four-goal run for the Greyhounds after that, scoring twice, while Hulseman and Burke also netted goals, to get Loyola its first multiple-goal lead, 6-3, with 2:28 remaining in the half.
A third goal from Collins snapped the streak and cut BU's halftime deficit to two, 6-4.
The Greyhounds tallied three-unanswered goals out of the break to pull ahead 9-5, while the defense held the Terriers scoreless until the 3:20 mark.
A goal from Collins then closed out the scoring in the game, leading to the 9-6 final.
In goal, junior Molly Wolf stopped six shots.
The Greyhounds will close out their Patriot League schedule on Saturday when they travel to Navy for a noon start. The game will be televised by CBS Sports Network.
