No. 7 Georgetown Defeats Women's Lacrosse, 14-3

Baltimore, Md. - No. 7 Georgetown topped Loyola 14-3 Saturday afternoon on Diane Geppi-Aikens Field in BIG EAST women's lacrosse action. The contest was tied at 3-3 late in the first half but the Hoyas scored 11 straight goals for the win. The `Hounds are now 2-9 on the season and 0-3 in conference play while GU improves to 7-5 overall and 3-0 in BIG EAST action.

The game started as a battle defensively with neither team getting on the board until nearly 12 minutes into play. Loyola freshman Emily Gibson scored the initial tally, unassisted, when her shot bounced out of and over Georgetown keeper Maggie Koch's stick and into the net.

The Hoya's tied the game at 1-1 with a free-position by Katie Burton in the 13th minute and took a 2-1 advantage when Brittany Bashuk scored unassisted after 19:4 of play. The GU offense continued to work as Coco Stanwick scored in the 20th minute with a low shot for the 3-1 lead.

The Greyhounds offense responded with a goal just over a minute later when freshman Jessie Heisterman passed off from behind to cage to senior Kate McHarg as she charged the net. McHarg beat Koch for the 3-2 score. Junior Maura Kenny tied the game at three all off a pass from classmate Kate Filippelli after 26:28 of play.

Stanwick returned the lead to the Hoyas when Schuyler Sutton passed off her free-position shot to Stanwick for the 4-3 advantage at 27:41. Sutton gave Georgetown a two-goal advantage, 5-3, at the break with her unassisted goal just over a minute later.

Georgetown continued that two-goal streak from the end of the second half, scoring nine straight goals in the second half for the 14-3 final. Four of Loyola's five shots in the second half were saved by Koch.

GU outshot Loyola 36-12 while Loyola keeper Karen Nicolaus stopped 13 shots, tying a career-high. Koch ended the game with eight saves.

Five Loyola players recorded a point in the game with Kenny, McHarg and Gibson scoring goals and Filippelli and Heisterman recording assists.

Stanwick led GU with four goals and an assist. Bashuck, Sutton and Bunny O'Reilly each added two goals and an assist. Megan Bloomer recorded a goal and an assists while Ashby Kaestner, Burton and Patty Piotrowicz each recorded a goal.

Loyola travels to UConn for its next outing on Wednesday, April 11 at 3:00. The game was originally scheduled for March 17 but was rescheduled due to weather.
