Women's Lacrosse Wins Battle with Penn State, 10-9

STATE COLLEGE, PA - The No. 4 Greyhounds fought off a second half rally by No. 18 Penn State for a 10-9 win over the Nittany Lions Saturday afternoon. Loyola improved to 11-1 while the Nittany Lions fall to 2-6.

The Greyhounds took an early 3-0 lead 14:21 into the game after a free position goal by Jen Schuerholz and goals from Rachel Shuck and Kourtney Porcella. Sydney Greene assisted on both Shuck and Porcella's goals. Penn State answered back with two quick goals in less than 30 seconds for a 3-2 score. The teams exchanged goals, Loyola's unassisted by Talia Shacklock before the Greyhound offense ended the half on a three goal run while the defense stifled PSU, allowing no goals for a 7-3 score.

Penn State came out fighting early in the second half scoring three goals in less than three minutes to come within one of Loyola, 7-6. The Greyhounds got on the board 34:35 into the contest when Shuck worked from behind the cage finding Jaclyn Borrone open for the goal. PSU answered back at 35:56 with Shari Maslin's third goal, keeping the Nittany Lions within one 8-7. Kristen Burke gave Penn State the tie when she scored at 40:50 to tie the game at eight. Neither team allowed a goal nearly 14 minutes until Borrone added her second goal, unassisted at 54:06 to give the Greyhounds back the lead, 9-8. Stephanie Walker gave Loyola a two goal cushion almost two minutes later but Penn State continued to fight. With 3:11 remaining Stephanie Curnoles pulled the Nittany Lions within one goal of Loyola for the third time but they would not get any closer for the remainder of the contest. PSU had a chance to tie the game 1:45 remaining and were called offsides.

Loyola held a 33-20 advantage on shots, a 30-15 advantage on groundballs and a 14-4 advantage on caused turnovers while Penn State held the advantage on draw controls, primarily in their second half run by a total of 13-8.

The Greyhounds were led for the fourth consecutive time by Greene with two goals and two assists. Borrone added two goals as well, both in the second half. Other goal scorers for Loyola were Shuck, Schuerholz, Porcella, Shacklock and Guarino.

Loyola's starting keeper, Kim Lawton made five saves in the first while Cindy Nicolaus stopped two shots in the second. PSU's Lee Tortelli made a total of 14 stops in goal.

The Greyhounds will return home after a three game road swing to host Duke on Geppi-Aikens Field Friday, April 9th at 4:00.
