No. 7 Penn State Tops Women's Lacrosse, 10-5

Baltimore, Md. - No. 7. Penn State took a 5-0 halftime lead to go on to defeat Loyola, 10-5 Saturday on Diane Geppi Aikens Field. The Nittany Lions improve to 7-3 overall while the Greyhounds fall to 3-6.

Neither team got onto the board until nearly half way into the first half when Emily Chamber's scored for Penn State 14:47 into the contest when she beat the keeper low. PSu's Kristen Burke would score on a similar play 19:50 into the contest for the 2-0 Penn State lead. The Nittany Lions added three more goals before the half from Lori Havrilla, Cahmbers and Burke for the 5-0 lead.

The Greyhounds came out of the half quickly as they scored two goals in just over a minute for a 5-2 mark. Kate Filippelli got the first Loyola goal when Maura Kenny hit her charging the cage and her shot beat the goalie in the low right corner. On the ensuing draw, Erin Cyphers passed the draw off to Kate McHarg at midfield. McHarg charged downfield and her low shot brought Loyola within three, 5-2 at 31:04. The squad's exchanged goals for a 6-3 score before the Nittany Lions went on a three goal run to claim a 9-3 lead 53:54 into the game. McHarg added to Loyola's total's at 54:19 for the 9-4 mark. Kate Towsend nabbed PSU's final tally at 26:32 while McHarg scored her fourth and final goal at 58:51 for the 10-5 final.

McHarg led Loyola with four out of five goals while Filippelli added the fifth and Kenny the assist.

Jessi Lieb and Emily Chambers each scored three goals for Penn State.

The Greyhounds held statistical advantages in shots 30-26 and draw controls at 14-3.

Loyola keepers Kim Lawton and Cindy Nicoaus stopped nine shots with Lawton making five saves in the first and Nicolaus recording four in the second. Penn State's Lee Tortelli recorded 14 saves. She stopped nine of Loyola's 12 shots in the first half to hold them scoreless.

Loyola returns to the road on Saturday, April 9 to visit Syracuse.
