GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The 17th-ranked Loyola University Maryland women's lacrosse team fell short at No. 4 Florida Tuesday afternoon, dropping an 11-8 contest to the Gators at Donald R. Dizney Stadium.
Senior Kara Burke led the Greyhounds (1-3) with her 11th career hat trick, scoring three goals, while classmate Molly Hulseman added two goals. Redshirt senior Taryn VanThof, senior Hannah Schmitt and junior Maddy Blakeman rounded out the scoring with one goal each.
For Florida (5-1), Nicole Graziano had a game-high five goals, while Shannon Gilroy, Mollie Stevens and Carly Ross tacked on two each.
The Greyhounds scored the game's first three goals, as Burke netted her first at 26:10, followed by a pair of goals from VanThof and Hulseman, that were both assisted by Thomas, at 24:58 ad 24:15, respectively.
Florida responded with three goals of its own by the 19:58 mark to tie the game at 3-3, before the Gators tacked on two more for a 5-3 advantage with 16:35 to play.
Blakeman halted the run with a goal at 14:21 and Burke finished a pass from Geiger at 12:59 to knot the score at five.
Back-to-back scores from the Gators put Florida back on top two, 7-5, but a free-position goal from Schmitt as time expired cut the Greyhounds' deficit to one, 7-6, at halftime.
The Gators started the second-half scoring with a goal at 29:21, before goals from Hulseman and Burke evened the score for a third time, at 8-8.
That would be the final goal Loyola would score though, as Florida notched the last three scores of the game for an 11-8 victory.
In goal, junior Molly Wolf came up with eight saves and had a game-high four ground balls.
Loyola will return to Baltimore to host No. 9 Penn State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
