Women's Basketball Returns Home

Baltimore, Md. - Thursday night the Greyhounds host their second home game of the season after playing eight of their first nine games of the season away from Reitz Arena. Loyola is currently 2-7 on the season while their opponents, Long Island University are 4-4.

Loyola holds a 6-3 advantage in the series with Long Island although the Blackbirds won the last contests 68-57 in the 1988-89 season. Current head coaches Candy Cage and Stephanie Gaitley have never met each other in a contest as head coaches.

In the last time out for the Greyhounds, Loyola got within a basket of Wake Forest early in the second half before the Demon Deacons went on a 13-0 run to pull away. Jackie Valderas led Loyola with 10 points in her second start of the season. She added seven rebounds. Lauren Troupe pulled down 12 boards for a game-high.

Loyola is led by junior Katie Scherle with 8.3 points and five rebounds a game. She is closely followed by Krystle Harrington with eight points a game and 3.9 assists a game. Jill Glessner follows in scoring but is currently out for 4-6 weeks with an injury. She is also second in rebounding, tied with Lauren Troupe at 7.7 points and 4.7 rebounds a game.

Long Island most recently fell to Fresno State, 74-64. The Black Birds posted four players in double-figures with Sara Oblak leading the way with 20 points. Polona Oberc followed with 17 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

Long Island posts four players in double-digits in scoring with Polona Oberc leading the way at 14.3 points a game. Kelli Sawyer follows with 12.9 point and 5.1 assists a game. Next on the list is Sara Oblak with 12.6 points a game. Rounding out the double-digit scorers with 11.9 points a game is Amber Wirth. Ravin Chase leads the Black Birds on the boards with 6.2 rebounds a game.
