About Today's Game
Today's game pits the host team, the 0-7 Leopards of Lafayette College against the Loyola Greyhounds (3-6).
Loyola holds a 2-1 advantage in the series with Lafayette. The last time the two teams met with in 1994 with the Greyhounds coming out on top, 58-31 to open the 1994-95 season en route to an NCAA Tournament appearance for Loyola that season. The Leopards won the first meeting between the two colleges, 73-50, near the close of the '77-78 season.
Greyhounds Last Time Out
EASTON, PA - Despite a late second-half run by Loyola and 18 points in the second half from Lauren Troupe, Liberty held onto a win Monday night, 70-62, in the first round of Lafayette's Holiday Classic. The Greyhounds fall to 3-6 on the season while the Lady Flames improve to 5-5.
Loyola was down by as much as 16 in the second half before the Greyhounds went on a 12-2 run sparked by sophomore forward Troupe to bring the game within reach with a 66-58 score.
Point guard Krystle Harrington sparked the run making one-for-two from the charity stripe at 5:17, then went on to grab a defensive board and get the ball down court to Brittany Dunn for the layup at 4:55. Dunn was fouled and converted the three-point play for a 64-52 score.
On the next play, Katie Scherle knocked down a Liberty pass for the steal and got the ball down court to Troupe who made her first of two consecutive three point shots at 4:33.
Dunn made the defensive play the next time down the floor but Harrington's layup attempt was blocked by Liberty's Katie Feenstra who ended the Lady Flames almost two minute scoring drought with a layup at 3:45 for a 66-55 score.
Troupe hit her second three just seconds later to pull the Greyhounds within eight, 66-58. Dunn made another fantastic defensive play to allow for a jumper by Jill Glessner at 3:17 for a 66-60 score.
The Greyhounds could not pull out a lead however, missing seven of their next eight shots to close out the game. Liberty hit two baskets and two free-throws to close out the game with a 70-62 score.
Loyola tied the game two times in the first half and took the lead once after tying the score at 22 on a three-pointer from Jill Henn. Lindsay Cobb gave the Greyhounds the lead with a jump shot at 4:07 before Liberty went on a 9-2 run to close the first half with a 31-26 lead.
Troupe led Loyola with 18 points, all in the second half. Troupe scored the first 10 points of the second half after sitting out much of the first due to early foul trouble. She was followed by Harrington with 11. Guards Cobb and Glessner led on the boards with five each while Dunn led in the assist column with four.
Liberty's 6-8 center, Feenstra, led the game in scoring with 21 points and 15 boards for the double-double. She was followed by Daina Staugaitiene with 17 points.
Scouting Report: The Leopards
Lafayette is lead by Colleen Fitzpatrick with an average of 18.5 points and 7.3 assists per game. She is followed by Kate Kokolus at 13.3. Kara Stetler is the assist leader at 2.8. She is also the teams steals leader with 1.5 a game. Brianne Welte has a team best five blocks in six games.
The Leopards and Greyhounds have both faced Georgetown this season, both falling to the Hoyas. Loyola travelled to DC just before the holiday break, falling 70-53 while Lafayette hosted GU in their season opener, falling 72-58.
For The Greyhounds
Sophomore Lauren Troupe continues to lead the Greyhounds with 11.6 points per game. She also averages a team second best 5.2 rebounds a game. Guards Krystle Harrington and Lindsay Cobb round out the top three spots at 8.2 and 7.6 points per game respecively. Katie Scherle is first in rebounding with an average of 5.9. Cobb is first in assists with 3.3 per game and is followed by Harrington with 2.8.
