EDISON, N.J. - Loyola College freshman point guard Candice Walker earned Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week honors for the second-straight week and the third time this season, the conference office announced today.
Walker helped the Greyhounds win three games last week, averaging 12.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.0 steals per game in victories over UMBC, Niagara and Canisius.
The wins, along with a victory last week at Mount St. Mary's, improved the Greyhounds overall record to 6-3. They started MAAC play 2-0 for the first time since the 2002-2003 season and just the third time in Loyola's 18-year MAAC history.
Walker played 36 minutes in each of the three games and did not leave the court in the second half of any of the contests.
Against Niagara on Friday, Walker tied for team-high honors with 15 points and a career-high seven rebounds. She scored 13 of her points in the second half and grabbed six rebounds after the break. Walker also had four assists and two steals versus the Purple Eagles.
Walker scored a game-high 16 points, matching her career-best, versus Canisius on Sunday. She dished out six assists and had two rebounds and a steal against the Golden Griffins.
With 2:50 remaining in the game, Walker stole the ball from Canisius' Brittnae Russell and traveled coast-to-coast for a lay-up to put Loyola up by four. She then made two free throws in the final 15 seconds to seal the victory.
The award is the third of the season for Walker. She was named Rookie of the Week on November 12 and December 3.
