EDISON, N.J. - Loyola College freshman point guard Candice Walker was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference's Rookie of the Week today for her efforts in the Greyhounds' 56-48 win over Mount St. Mary's on Saturday.
Walker, who has started all six games at the point for the 3-3 Greyhounds, scored in double figures for the second game in a row, finishing with 11 points against the Mount.
She was also a key part of Loyola's 36-27 rebounding advantage, finishing with a game-high tying three offensive rebounds. Walker finished with four rebounds and an assist in 35 minutes of action.
Walker's ability to drive to the basket and score or create for her teammates was critical in the second half, as the Greyhounds held off the Mountaineers. She scored seven of her points after halftime, including going 3-of-3 from the free-throw line.
The win at Mount St. Mary's snapped a three-game Loyola losing streak. The Greyhounds return to action tonight at 7 p.m. with a home game versus UMBC.
The award is the second of Walker's career. She received MAAC Rookie of the Week laurels after the first weekend of the season when Loyola defeated Drexel and Villanova.
Through the first six games of the season, Walker is averaging 7.8 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. She also has a 1.2:1 assist:turnover ratio this year.
