The Greyhounds enter the weekend off a loss against the University of Hartford Hawks.
The 64-50 loss in the season opener sent the Greyhounds 0-1 for the 2012-13 season.
Before the game, senior Katie Sheahin was named the 2012 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year. Fellow Greyhound, Erik Etherly, also received the prestigious honor on the men's side, and both awards mark the first time two Greyhounds have won the title in the same year.
Sheahin and junior Kara Marshall posted double digits against the Hawks.
Freshmen: Bryanna Robinson, Tiffany Padgett, Diana Logan, Brittany Butler, and Jeneh Perry all saw action in the season opener, playing a combined total of 35 minutes.
Scouting the Terrapins
The University of Maryland women's basketball team enters the matchup 1-0, after a win Friday against Mount Saint Mary's 88-47.
The fifth ranked Terrapins will be playing in their first road game of the season, as they enter the matchup in Reitz Arena.
Tianna Hawkins and Alicia DiVaughn ended the game with double-double figures.
Two other Terrapins scored double digits, including freshman center Malina Howard.
The season opener shattered records in the Comcast Center, as Tianna Hawkins became the 28th person in the school's history to score more than one thousand points. Alyssa Thomas also recorded her 500th rebound against the Mountaineers.
Maryland returns four starters from last year's team that won the ACC, and traveled to the elite eight, including .
Alyssa Thomas, Tianna Hawkins, and Laurin Mincy all received Preseason All-ACC team honors.
Series with Maryland
Loyola enters the 22nd meeting between the Greyhounds and the Terrapins.
Maryland leads the series 18-3, with the only Loyola victories coming in 1994, `97, and `98.
The two teams have played six years consecutively, with the first meeting happening in 1974, as the Terrapins beat the Greyhounds 70-26.
Last season, Loyola fell to Maryland 84-46. Katie Sheahin led the Greyhounds with 13 points, and seven rebounds. Kara Marshall, Nai Brown, and Steph Smith all made their debut appearance in the game.
Assistant coach Keith Booth was an assistant coach at Maryland for seven seasons under former men's head coach Gary Williams.
Loyola vs. The MAAC
Loyola was picked to finish third in the preseason coaches poll. The Greyhounds finished only 16 points behind Niagara University. In a unanimous vote, the seven-time defending champion Marist College Red Foxes took first.
The Greyhounds went 9-9 in conference play last season, notching a 6-3 record against teams when playing them for a second time.
Marist was the only team that swept Loyola during the regular-season. The Greyhounds split with every other team besides Siena, who they beat in both meetings.
The Greyhounds are 192-191 all-time against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponents, including 69-57 under Head Coach Joe Logan.
Logan has the most wins of any Loyola head coach in program history against conference opponents.
The Greyhounds are 115-79 at home against the MAAC, including 38-25 under Logan.
The Greyhounds are 78-111 on the road against the MAAC, including 31-32 under Logan.
Loyola heads to UMBC for an afternoon game, starting at 2 p.m., in Cantsonville, Md.
