Baltimore, Md. - The Loyola women's basketball team is the preseason favorite to win the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) according to the preseason coaches' poll released today. The Greyhounds, with five first-place votes receive 90 points in the women's poll while the men are picked 10th with 10 points in their respective poll.
The women's team finished with an overall record of 14-15 last season and placed fifth in the MAAC, but Head Coach Candy Cage returns four starters and 11 letterwinners, including preseason first-team selection Katie Scherle.
"As coaches, we know that preseason picks don't mean a thing," says Cage. "We're just working hard at practice and trying to get better every day."
Scherle, a 2003-04 second-team All-MAAC selection, averaged 12.7 points per game while shooting a league-best 52 percent from the field. Teammates Krystle Harrington and Lauren Troupe also earned preseason All-MAAC recognition at "Media Day" with third-team honors.
On the men's side, no Greyhounds were picked to the conference's preseason squad. Manhattan, the defending MAAC champion, was picked to repeat with four first-place votes and 85 poll points.
