SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team was picked to finish second in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, the league office announced Tuesday. The vote was made by the league's ten head coaches and announced at the MAAC Preseason Awards Show held at the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.
Loyola, which finished second in the MAAC regular-season last year and made a run to the MAAC Championship title game, received their highest ranking since 2004 when the team was picked to win the league. Reigning champion, Marist, was selected as the preseason favorite.
The Greyhounds are coming off one of their most successful season in program history, tying a Loyola record with 21 wins and winning their first-ever postseason game by knocking off Old Dominion in the Women's National Invitation Tournament.
Senior Miriam McKenzie and junior Katie Sheahin were both selected to the Preseason All-MAAC First Team. McKenzie led Loyola in scoring (14.0 per game) and rebounding (7.4 per game) while being named to the All-MAAC First Team and the Spark Energy MAAC All-Tournament team last year. She started 33 games for the Greyhounds, averaging 30.7 minutes and shooting 40.3-percent from the field.
McKenzie also ranks among the best to ever put on the Green and Grey uniform. The senior sits 19th on the all-time career scoring list with 1,008 points and ninth in three-point field goals made with 71.
Sheahin became the first Greyhound to be named MAAC Defensive Player of the Year. She also was named to the Spark Energy MAAC All-Tournament team and was an All-MAAC Second Team honoree.
The junior ranked second on the team in scoring (13.1 per game) and rebounding (6.0 per game). Sheahin led the team in minutes played, averaging 35.4 minutes per game and finished the year ranked second in the nation and first in the MAAC in steals with 118.
Loyola starts its 2011 campaign on Friday, November 11 at Maryland at 7 p.m. The Greyhounds play their home opener on Sunday, November 13 at 5 p.m. against Navy at Reitz Arena.
