CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Loyola University Maryland women’s basketball was picked to finish eighth in its inaugural Patriot League season the conference announced today when it unveiled a preseason poll voted on by all 10 League coaches and sports information directors.
The United States Naval Academy, last year’s Patriot League Tournament Champions took the top spot with 157 votes, and 14 first-place nods. The United States Military Academy and fellow Patriot League-newcomer Boston University finished second and third, respectively, with three first-place votes each.
The College of the Holy Cross grabbed the fourth place spot with 112 points, while Lehigh University (97) and American University (87) finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Bucknell University was selected seventh, totaling 62 votes, followed by Loyola (54), Lafayette College (37) and Colgate University (33).
Last season, Loyola went 12-18 overall, 7-11 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The Greyhounds fell to Manhattan College, 50-49, in the first round of the conference tournament.
The Greyhounds return nine players, including sophomores Diana Logan and Tiffany Padgett who each received MAAC Rookie Team honors last season. The duo became the second pair of freshmen in program history to receive the honor in the same season.
Senior guard Nicole Krusen finished second in the Greyhounds’ former conference in 3-point field goal percentage, shooting 41 percent against other MAAC schools from behind the arc. Classmate Nneka Offodile returns after leading Loyola in field-goal percentage and blocks last season.
Loyola opens its 2013-14 season in just over two week, as the Greyhounds travel to the University of Maryland, on Sunday, Nov. 10. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
