May 3, 2006

Seniors Jackie Valderas and Katie Scherle were among those honored Monday evening at the annual Loyola College Department of Athletics Banquet. Scherle was given the Diane Geppi-Aikens Inspriational Award while Valderas was the winner of the Medal of Merit.

Senior women's basketball standout Katie Scherle was named as this year's recipient of the Diane Geppi-Aikens Inspirational Award. Despite battling through injury, Scherle was one of six Loyola players to appear in all 30 games for first-year Coach Joe Logan and averaged 6.7 points per game. Against Canisius on February 5, she became the 17th player in Loyola College women's basketball history to reach 1,000 career points and ended her career ranked 10th on the school's career rebounding ledger.

Senior forward Jackie Valderas of the Greyhound women's basketball team was named as the women's recipient of the Medal of Merit award. A two-time MAAC Sixth Player of the Year recipient, Valderas led the Greyhounds to their best record since the 1998-1999 season as Loyola advanced to the MAAC Championship Game. She played in all 30 games, averaging 9.9 points and 6.4 rebounds per outing. She recorded a career-high 13 rebounds in the Greyhounds' December 28 victory at San Diego State. A two-time MAAC Player of the Week selection, Valderas also earned MAAC All-Academic Team honors.
