EDISON, N.J. - Loyola University Maryland senior guard Katie Sheahin was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Week on Monday, after leading the women’s basketball team to a 2-0 record in the final week of the regular season.
Sheahin led Loyola in scoring, rebounds, and steals last week, averaging 20 points, 9.5 boards, and 2.5 steals. She shot one hundred percent from the free throw line, going 4-4 against the Fairfield Stags, and 2-2 versus the Saint Peter’s Peacocks.
Sheahin led Loyola to a 56-48 victory over the Stags, who were then tied for second in the conference, with her seventh-career double-double, scoring 17 points and grabbing ten rebounds. In her final showing at Reitz Arena, Sheahin and fellow classmate Alyssa Sutherland combined for 35 of the Greyhounds 56 points.
Two days later, the senior guard tabbed her thirteenth career 20-plus point game, helping Loyola to a 57-45 victory over the Peacocks. Sheahin tied her career-high, shooting nine shots from the floor, while connecting on three baskets from behind the arc.
This season, Sheahin is third in the MAAC and tops the team with 14.4 points per game. The senior holds career-program records in three categories, including steals where she beat the number two player by more than 80 thefts.
The No. 8 Greyhounds will take on the No. 9 Manhattan College Jaspers Thursday, March 7 at 2 p.m., in the first round of the 2013 MAAC Tournament.
