EDISON, N.J. - Loyola freshman point guard Candice Walker earned Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference All-Rookie Team honors, today, by a vote of the league's coaches.
Walker is now one of five players eligible for MAAC Rookie of the Year honors, which will be announced on Thursday evening at an awards banquet at the MAAC Championships in Albany, N.Y.
"Candice worked extremely hard, and it is great to see her get recognized for her efforts," Head Coach Joe Logan said. "Playing the point guard role is always tough, but for a freshman to step in and play as well as she has is great."
The 5-foot-5 product of nearby Towson Catholic High School was the top freshman scorer in the conference this season, averaging 8.4 points per game.
She started every game this season and also led all MAAC rookies in assists with 2.7 per game. With 76 assists during the regular-season, Walker is one away from setting a Loyola freshman record in the category.
Walker scored in double-figures 13 times during the season and led Loyola in scoring on four occasions. She also led the Greyhounds in assists 14 times and topped the squad in minutes plays in 11 games.
Walker led Loyola in minutes played throughout the season, averaging 32.8 per game. She finished the regular-season ninth in the conference in minutes played and was tops amongst rookies.
"I was pleased with the progress that she made during the year," Logan said. "We will look to her for more improvement in the years to come, and we hope that this is an award that she can build on in the future."
