Tonight the #6 Greyhounds (9-10, 5-5) play host to the #10 Broncs of Rider College (4-15, 2-8).
The Series vs. Rider
The Greyhounds hold a 13-6 advantage over Rider in the series between the two teams. Prior to a victory over the Greyhounds in Lawrenceville earlier this season, the Broncs had not beaten Loyola since 2001.
Greyhounds Last Time Out
BALTIMORE, MD - The Loyola women's basketball team sealed a 62-59 victory over Iona by going 8-for-10 from the line in the closing minute of play in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match-up at the Mulcahy Center Saturday. The Greyhounds improved to 9-10 and even in the conference at 5-5. Iona falls to 3-15 and 2-7 in the conference with the loss.
The Greyhounds built up as much as a 15-point lead in the first half behind a 14-point effort by sophomore Katie Scherle. Iona then went on a 12-0 run sparked by senior Michelle Fahy from 5:31 to 3:15 to cut the lead to three but the Greyhounds scored the last two baskets of the first half to maintain a 34-27 advantage at halftime.
In the second half, the two teams battled back and forth with Loyola leading by as much as 13 before Iona whittled that lead away, trailing by just two points with 45 seconds remaining. Despite not making a basket for the last 5:22 of the game, Loyola went 7-for-8 from the free-throw line in the last 45 seconds to seal the victory.
Scherle lead the game with 21 points ad was followed by senior Lindsay Cobb with 17 points, four assists and three steals. Sophomore Krystle Harrington was next with eight points, six assists and five steals including a pivotal grab in the closing seconds of play. Iona's Fahy scored 33 points in Saturday's game. She was followed by Melissa Yeagley with nine points. Freshman Meg Abele was held to just two points but nabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
Iona did outrebound Loyola, 42-33 but the Greyhounds led in nearly every other category posting 20 assists, 13 steals, four blocks and committing just 13 turnovers.
Loyola shot 43% from the field, 40% from three-point range and 71% from the charity stripe in Saturday's effort.
Scouting Report: The Broncs
Rider is led by Becky Hower with 13.9 points per game. She is closely followed by Leanne Moore at 13.8 and a team-high of 6.3 rebounds per game. Kara Borel is tied with Moore in boards. Katie Hall is third in scoring at 9.9 points per game while Lauren Thomer is the squads assist leader at 2.9 per game. Moore also leads in the block category with an average of 2.1 per game. Hower leads in thefts at 2.2 a game.
For The Greyhounds
Loyola is currently led by Katie Scherle with 11.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. She is followed in both categories by Lauren Troupe at 11.2 and 5.4 respectively. In the points column, guards Krystle Harrington and Lindsay Cobb are third and fourth with 7.8 and 7.1 points per game respectively. On the boards, Jill Glessner is third with 3.6 per game. In the assist column, Cobb leads with 3.7 a game. She is followed by Harrington with 3.6. Harrington is on top of steals with 2.5 per game.Scherle is currently shooting a team-best .500 from the floor while Troupe is tops for the charity stripe at .789.
