Villanova, Pa. - The Loyola College women's basketball team earned its fifth win on the road this season with a 61-54 victory over Villanova Thursday night at The Pavilion. The Greyhounds improve to 5-6 on the season while the Wildcats fall to 5-7.
The first half was evenly matched with neither team leading by more than five for much of the half. The `Hounds earned the lead at 15:28 and held it for the half, eventually leading by six, 21-15, at the five minute mark with a basket by junior Meghan Wood. Wood added two free throws at 3:10 to extend the lead to 23-15 and another basket at 2:25 for the 25-15 Loyola lead.
Villanova's Maria Getty hit a three to counter Wood's run at 2:05 for the 25-18 score but Loyola's Vika Sholokhova, in her first appearance in a Greyhounds uniform, scored at 1:39 to answer and set the score at 27-18.
Jill Glessner scored the final Loyola basket of the half before Villanova's Jackie Adamshick's basket sent the teams to the locker room with the score set at 29-20.
The Greyhounds applied more offensive pressure with a 6-0 run to open the second half and extend their lead to 35-20. Glessner score the initial bucket while freshman Kaitlin Grant added back-to-back baskets. The teams went back and fourth but Loyola retained a double-digit lead and got ahead by as much as 18, 43-25, with 13:35 to play.
Villanova wasn't ready to concede as they scored 12 straight points all on three pointers or three-point plays. Getty hit a three at 12:37 for the 43-28 score and added a three-point play at 12:13 to lesson Loyola's lead to 43-28. Lisa Karcic added a three at 11:45 for the 43-34 score and Siobhan O'Connor topped off the run with a three at 11:10 for the 43-37 marker.
Glessner ended the Loyola drought with a 1-for-2 effort from the line and Sholokhova hit a three of her own to return the lead to double-digits, 47-37 with 10 minutes on the clock.
The Wildcats continued their attempt to whittle away at Loyola's lead and lowering it to as much as 55-51 with 1:33 to play but the Greyhounds remained composed and retained the win. Villanova forced Loyola to the line 19 times over the final five minutes. The Greyhounds hit eight of those shots to earn the 61-54 final.
Glessner led with 17 points while Wood recorded the first double-double of her career with 13 points and 16 rebounds. Her 16 boards topped her previous career-high of nine. Sholokhova added nine points, six rebounds and one assist in her debut.
Adamshick finished with 22 while Karcic recorded a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Getty added 11 points.
Loyola returns home to finish the 2006 portion of the schedule, hosting Penn on Sunday, December 31 at 1:00.
