VILLANOVA, Pa. - Loyola started off behind Drexel and stayed behind, as the Dragons defeated the `Hounds 69-58 Monday afternoon at the Pavilion in Villanova, Pa., in game one of Villanova's Wildcat Holiday Classic.
Drexel led from start to finish and managed to fight off several Loyola comeback attempts. Loyola was within four in the second half, and several times cut the lead to just six, but Drexel's Gabriela Marginean was nearly uncontainable going for 25 points and 11 rebounds.
McKenzie got off to a hot start in the second half. Just seconds into the half and the Greyhounds down by nine, McKenzie netted a layup and buried a deep three, putting the score at 36-30.
The Dragons began to pull away but a Kaitie Sheahin three a few minutes later put the Greyhounds back to within six points of tying.
Marginean quickly widened that deficit with a layup and a jumper, but once again Loyola launched another comeback attempt. Strong post play by Grant and free throws helped the Greyhounds chip away at the Dragons' lead. A layup by McKenzie put the score at 56-50 with just 5:30 left to play.
Alyssa Sutherland then knocked in two free throws to close the gap.
But Drexel's Allison Lupariello netted a three and McKenzie's follow up attempt came up short. Taylor Wootton then netted a layup and what was once just a four point deficit was now a nine-point gap with 3:50 left in the game.
Candice Walker hit a three with less than two minutes left in the game but the Greyhounds were left with too little time to spark a final rally.
Loyola will play the loser of the game between host Villanova and San Francisco in the consolation game Tuesday, at 5:30 p.m. The game will be the final non-conference contest of the 200-2010 season.
