Towson, Md. - The Loyola College women's basketball team returned from a break for final exams with a 70-62 win over local-rival Towson. The Greyhounds improve to 5-3 with the win while the Tigers fall to 5-3 with the loss. Loyola has now won seven of the last eight games in the series with Towson.
"This is a great win against a tough Towson team," head coach Joe Logan said. "We shot well from the floor and the free-throw line, had 20 assists on 26 field-goals and only 11 turnovers. It's a great overall win for us."
After six lead exchanges to open the game, the Greyhounds went on a 10-2 run to claim the lead 24-16 with 5:40 left to play in the first half. Five different players scored in the run for the Greyhounds. The Tigers used back to back jump shots to cut Loyola's lead to 24-20 with 3:50 remaining but Loyola outscored Towson with back-to-back layups by Lauren Troupe, a jumper by Tynisha Daivs and a three-point basket by Jill Glessner as time ran out gave the Greyhounds a 33-24 lead at the half.
The Tigers crept back within reach early in the second half by outscoring the Greyhounds 12-6 in the opening five minutes in the second half for a 39-36 score. Jackie Valderas helped Loyola answer Towson's run with back-to-back baskets for a 43-36 score with 14 minutes to play. Neither team scored for the next two minutes when Krystle Harrington adding to Loyola's lead. Towson's Tierra Jackson hit tow free-throws for the 45-38 margin but Valderas and Harrington each added another basket to give the Greyhounds's their largest lead, 49-38.
Loyola stayed up by at least nine points until 3:34 with the score set at 60-51 when Towson went on a six point run capped by a three-pointer by Rose LaShay for a 62-57 score at 2:44. Valderas again answered for Loyola with a basket and Lauren Troupe's two free-throws for the 64-57 score. LaShay did her best to keep Towson in reach with five points in the next two minutes for a 64-62 score but the Tigers were forced to foul over the remaining 42 seconds of play. The Greyhounds hit 6-of-8 shots to finish with a 70-62 win.
Glessner led the Greyhounds with 13 points and five assists. Valderas add 12, 10 in the second half and eight rebounds. Davis added 10 points while Dunn score eight. Vanessa Ruffin, Troupe and Katie Scherle each scored seven points while Harrington added six.
The Greyhounds shot an impressive 54.2% from the floor and 72.7% from the stripe. Loyola tallied 20 assists, eight steals and five blocks as a team.
Towson was led by Tanya West and Jackson with 16 points each. Rose added 15 and Kelly Robinson chipped in 11.
The Greyhounds are back in action after the holidays when they travel to San Diego State to take part in the Surf `N Slam Tournament.
