Lawrenceville, N.J. - The Loyola College women's basketball team earned their first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win with a 70-59 victory over Rider at Alumni Gym Sunday afternoon. The Greyhounds improved to 4-5 overall and 1-1 conference play while the Broncs fall to 0-7 on the season and 0-2 in the MAAC.
The teams battled back and fourth for much of the first half but with the Rider up 18-14 with just over nine minutes to play, Loyola went on a 14-2 run to take a 28-20 lead. The Greyhounds put together that run over six minutes, holding Rider without a basket for over five minutes. Freshman Erica DiClemente scored seven points in that stretch while classmate Kaitlin Grant added five. The Broncs ended their scoring drought with a 1-for-2 effort from the line by Amanda Sepulveda at 3:02 for the 28-21 score before Jill Glessner scored back-to-back baskets to extend Loyola's lead to 32-21 with 1:23 to play. Rider's Danielle Costantino answered with a bucket at 1:06 but Loyola's Ebony Toliver hit a shot as time ran out for the Greyhounds to have a 34-243 half-time lead.
Senior Brittany Dunn scored the first five points of the half, including a three-point play, for the 39-23 lead. Classmate Vanessa Ruffin added a basket from Dunn at 18:20 for the largest lead of the game, 41-23. Rider's Kara Borel answered for the 43-25 score but Ruffin countered with her second basket of the half for the 43-25 mark at 17:15. The Broncs put together a 6-0 run to cut that margin to 43-31 but Loyola answered with an 8-2 run to retain a larger lead, 51-34 with 10:55 on the clock. The Broncs would not go away however as they held the Greyhounds with a basket for the next four and a half minutes. Rider outscored Loyola 17-2 from 10:55 to 6:23 for the 53-51 score. Both of the `Hounds points came from free-throws. Glessner hit two more free-throws and Meghan Wood added a jumper for the 57-51 with five minutes left. The Broncs hit back-to-back baskets to cut the lead to two, 57-55 but Loyola outscore Rider 13-2 over the final five minutes for the 70-59 win. Six different Greyhounds scored in the run with seven points coming from free-throws and the other six from the floor.
Glessner led with 18 points while DiClemente scored 12 points with four rebounds. Grant added 11 points and seven rebounds. Dunn and Ruffin each scored nine points with Ruffin nabbing six rebounds and Dunn dishing out six assists. Wood added eight points and six boards.
Rider's Kelli Sawyer scored 14 points while Janele Henderson added 10 points and six rebounds.
Loyola is back in action on Dec. 21 when the Greyhounds host the defending national champion Maryland Terrapins at Reitz Arena at 7:00.
