Washington, D.C. - The Loyola College women's basketball team could not overcome an 11-point deficit late in the second half Thursday night, falling to Howard 59-53 at Burr Gymnasium. The Greyhounds fall to 1-5 with the loss while the Bison remain undefeated at 5-0.
In the first half Howard jumped out to a 13-4 lead at 13:11, allowing just one Loyola filed goal in that time. The Greyhounds connected on back-to-back baskets by Katie Scherle and Lauren Troupe for the 13-8 score at 10:38. Loyola played tough defense over the next 10 minutes to whittle away that lead. Jackie Valderas made a steal at 5:32 and followed it with a basket to cut the lead to three at 19-16 with 5:32 remaining. Krystle Harrington made the next defensive move with a steal and a basket at 5:13 to pull Loyola within one at 21-20. The Bisons scored the next five points to take a 25-20 lead. The Greyhounds went on an 8-2 run to finish the half and claim their first lead at 28-27. Jill Glessner scores five points in that run for Loyola.
Howard reclaimed the lead in the second half an got up by as much as 11 points with eight minutes remain on an 11-2 run featuring two three point baskets and six points by Daisha Hicks. The Greyhounds again worked to delete their deficit with a run of there own. Loyola scored six straight baskets and did not allow a point by Howard for over four minutes to pull within three for a 50-47 at 3:47. But it would not get any closer as Howard outscored Loyola 9-6 in the final three minutes for the 59-53 final.
Hicks led all scorers with 21 points and was joined in double-figures by teammate Benson with 11. Andrea Jones pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.
Loyola held a slim advantage on the boards at 44-43 while the two teams committed a total of 49 turnovers. The Greyhounds shot just 34.9% from the floor while Howard shot 42.4%.
The Greyhounds, after six straight road games, will host Towson in their home opener on Sunday, December 12 at 2:00.
