Newark, Del. - The University of Delaware had four players in double figures en route to a 63-49 victory over Loyola Sunday in women's basketball action at the Bob Carpenter Center. It was the 2004-05 season opener for both squads.
The Blue Hens opened the game with a nine-point scoring run before Lauren Troupe got the Greyhounds on the board with a three-pointer at 18:03. Delaware's Julie Sailer answered back with a three of her own at 17:41 for a 12-3 score and to start an 11-2 scoring run to put the Blue Hens up 21-5. Loyola attempted to whittle away at the 16-point led going on quick five-point run but never closed the gap more than 11-points for a 31-20 half-time score.
It was much of the same in the second half as Delaware built up as much as a 21-point margin on the Greyhounds with a 53-32 advantage with 8:02 remaining to play. The squads would exchange baskets over the next several minutes before Loyola went on a 8-2 run to close the contest. Jill Glessner and Troupe each had two baskets before Tyresa Smith hit a buzzer beater for the 63-49 final.
Despite the loss, Loyola shot 46.2% from the field including an impressive 61.1% in the second half. The Greyhounds committed 31 turnovers however, allowing 25 points by Delaware off those turnovers.
Leading the way for Loyola was Glessner with 10 points she was followed by Krystle Harrington with nine points and seven rebounds to tie a previous career high.
Four of Delaware's starters posted double figures with Tiara Malcom leading the way with 17. Malcom also pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.
The Greyhounds are back in action next Friday, November 26th at American. Tip off is set for 7:00.
