UMBC Tops Women's Basketball in a 58-56 Thriller

Baltimore, Md. - UMBC's Amanda Robinson's jump shot with four seconds left on the clock gave the Retrievers a 58-56 win over the Loyola College women's basketball team Friday night at the RAC Arena. UMBC improves to 1-2 with the win while the `Hounds fall to 1-2.

The game was close from the start but with the score set at 15-11 with UMBC leading, the Greyhounds hit back to back three's to claim a 17-15 lead at 12:19. Junior Tynisha Davis hit the first three while senior Jill Glessner hit the second. Junior Meghan Wood added two free-throws at 10:48 for a 19-15 advantage.

UMBC continued to fight and the teams tied four times over the next six minutes. UMBC's Shari Rohde tied the game the fourth time at 28-28 with 4:39 and added a free-throw for the three-point play and the 29-28 lead. Rohde added a basket at 4:05 for the 31-28 advantage. Wood answered Rohde's scoring effort with a basket at 3:52 for the 31-30 score but Rohde went to the line again, hitting two shots for a 33-30 Retriever advantage.

Neither teams put points on the board for nearly a minute and a half. UMBC's Brittnie Hughes, who had 16 points in the first half, hit one-for-two from the line to extend the Retriever advantage to 34-30 with 2:07 left. The Greyhounds held UMBC without a basket over the next two minutes and got a two-for-two effort from freshman Erica DiClemente and a three from sophomore Siobhan Prior to take a 35-34 lead at the half.

The second half continued to be a battle with eight ties and neither team leading by more than two until there were three minutes left in the half. With the game tied at 51 with 4:08 on the clock, Davis hit a jump shot for a 53-51 lead. Glessner added a free-throw at 3:05 for the 54-51 lead, the largest in the half. Hughes hit her fourth three of the night at 2:39 to tie the game for the ninth time in the second half at 54. Senior Brittany Dunn returned the advantage to the `Hounds at 56-54 with a 2-for-2 effort from the line at 2:05. The teams battled defensively for the next minute until UMBC's Heather Luttrell hit two free-throws for the 56-56 tie with 59 seconds on the clock. As the seconds ticked off, both defensives made scoring difficult but Robinson was able to get a basket with four seconds left for the 58-56 Retrievers victory.

Loyola senior Vanessa Ruffin recorded a career-high 11 points to lead the team. Ruffin scored six of her 11 points in the first three minutes of play. Glessner added 10 points and a game-high seven rebounds. She also added three assists and a steal. Wood and Davis each added eight points. Prior tied a career-high with six points while DiClemente set a new career-high with the same.

Hughes ended the game with 21 points including a 4-for-4 effort from three-point range. Rohde added 16 for UMBC.

The Greyhounds host Hartford Sunday, November 19 in their home opener at Reitz Arena. Tip-off is set for 2:00.
