ALBANY, NY - The Loyola College women's basketball team rallied past Rider, 79-65, in the first round of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament Thursday afternoon at the Pepsi Arena. The Greyhounds improve to 14-14 on the season with the victory and will move on to face Canisius on Friday.
The two teams battled back and forth for much of the first half until senior Lindsay Cobb gave Loyola an eight point lead by nailing a three-pointer with 4:05 remaining in the half. Rider's Denise Moore answered back by Cobb would get another basket to maintain the eight point lead, 32-24. The Broncs brought the Greyhound lead down to five with four points from Leanne Moore but Loyola got the last basket of the half as the buzzer rang with a layup by freshman Meghan Wood for a 36-29 lead.
The Greyhounds worked hard to maintain their lead early on in the second stanza. Krsytle Harrington made a steal and went coast to coast for an 11 point lead, 42-31, at 18:08. Rider wasn't about to give up however, making a quick five point run to cut the Loyola lead to six at 14:09. Loyola played strong defensively for the next several minutes, not allowing a Rider basket for nearly eight minutes. The Broncs hit went 7-for-8 from the line in that time but never hit a shot from the floor. The Greyhounds were just as solid on the offensive end, getting as much as a 21 point lead with just over four minutes remaining. The Broncs finally got on from the floor at 4:02 and again with a three at 3:33 to cut the lead to 16, 71-55 but the Greyhounds would go on to hit 8-of-10 from the charity stripe over the last two minutes, including five from Kerri-Lynn Orsini, to earn the 79-65 final score.
Sophomore second-team all-MAAC selection, Katie Scherle led the team with a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds. She was followed n the points column by Harrington with 16 points as well as five assists. Freshman Jill Glessner added nine points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals. Classmante Meghan Wood scored a career-high eight points. Sophomore Lauren Troupe tied Scherle with 10 boards.
Rider's Leanne Moore scored a game-high 22 points and added eight rebounds. Moore was the only Bronc in double-figures.
The Greyhounds outshot the Broncs, 46.2 % to 33.3% as well as out-rebounded them, 45-39.
Loyola will now face the No. 4 seed Cansius at 9:15 a.m. Friday morning. The two squads split this season series, each winning on their home court.
