Bridgeport, Conn. - The Loyola College women's basketball team fell to Iona, 62-58, Saturday morning in the semi-final round of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament. The Greyhounds fall to 18-12 on the season while the Gaels improve to 20-11. Seniors Jill Glessner and Brittany Dunn scored 13 and 12 points respectively for Loyola.
"I'm proud of our effort today," head coach Joe Logan said. "We were down seven and started to rush. I called a timeout and we told the team, we're down seven, not 70. From then on we chipped away but sometimes the ball just doesn't bounce your way."
It was a see-saw game to start but with Iona up 11-6 with 14:38 after the Gaels hit their third three, the Greyhounds stepped up. Loyola went on an 8-2 run to take their first lead, 14-13 at the 12-minute mark. Junior forward Meghan Wood hit two free-throws to start. Dunn hit a long jumper from the corner to get Loyola within one, 11-10 before a lay-up by Iona's Toni Horvath. On the next play, Glessner scored on an in bounds pass for the 13-12 mark before an Iona offensive foul. On the next Loyola possession junior guard Tynisha Davis drove to the basket to take the lead, 14-13 at 11:58. Jessica Anger reclaimed the lead for Iona at 10:18 but Loyola wanted the advantage again. Davis scored Loyola's next basket as the shot clock ran down and then hit one-of-two free-throws the `Hounds next trip down the court for a 17-15 Loyola lead at nine minutes. A put back by Iona's Anna McClean tied things up at 17 before a jumper by Loyola's Ebony Toliver but the lead in the Greyhounds hands again, 19-17 with eight minutes left in the half. The Gaels scored the next six points to regain the lead 23-19 at 3:48 but both teams struggled to put any more points on the board in the first half. Dunn hit two free-throws for the Greyhounds for a 23-21 Iona lead at intermission.
Wood tied the game at 23 early in the second half. Iona scored the next two baskets to get up 27-23 at 17:52. Loyola cut the lead to one three times over the next couple minutes before Iona went on an 8-2 run from 15:11 to 12:44 to take a 39-32 lead but the Greyhounds kept coming. Regan Pettijohn scored six points in that run. Over the next six minutes, Loyola hit 9-of-10 shots from the line while adding another basket by Davis to stay in it at 47-43 with six minutes to play. Iona's Lauren DeFalco hit two shots from the charity stripe and Jessica Anger added a basket to give the Gaels, their largest lead at 51-43 with 4:21 to play. Loyola continued to stay close however and with a three-pointer by junior center Vika Sholokhova with 5 seconds left, were within two. The Greyhounds were forced to foul and Martina Weber hit two free-throws with 14 seconds left. But nine seconds later freshman Erica DiClemente was fouled and hit both shots to again make it a two point game, 60-58. Iona's McLean hit the next two free-throws for the 62-58 final.
Glessner led for Loyola with 13 points, four rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block. Dunn added 12 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Davis finished with nine points while Wood and Sholokhova each had eight.
DeFalco and Weber each scored 11 points to lead Iona while Pettijohn scored 10.
