BALTIMORE, MD - Krystle Harrington scored a career-high 20 points, along with two other Loyola players in double digits to lead the Greyhounds over Saint Peter's, 60-49, at Reitz Arena Wednesday evening. The win ties the two teams for fifth place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference with both teams recording 8-9 records in conference play.
Throughout the first half, the two teams battled back and forth. Saint Peter's broke a 8-8 tie with seven straight points, five from Lindsey Gonzalez for the lead. Loyola's Lindsay Cobb answered back for a 13-10 score before Gonzalez added to her points totals with a jump shot at 11:33 for a 15-10 Pea Hens lead. The squads continued to battle the Greyhounds getting within one of SPC with a layup by freshman Meghan Wood at 9:19. SPC's Tonya Vance answered back but Ebony Toliver brought it back within one, 17-16, at 8:44. The Pea Hen's worked over the next five minutes to build up as much as a seven point lead with 2:55 remaining in the half. But the Greyhounds continued to fight as well, going on a 5-0 run to close out the half for Saint Peter's slim 28-26 lead.
The teams exchanged the lead six times in the first 12 minutes of the second half, with the Greyhounds getting up as much as six before Loyola went on an 18-5 run to finish the contest. Katie Scherle gave the Greyhounds a 45-44 advantage at the eight minute mark. Loyola followed Scherle's basket with seven more unanswered points, five by freshman Jill Glessner for a 52-44 Greyhound lead. The teams each hit two baskets, keeping Loyola up eight points with 5:05 remaining. Saint Peter's missed their last seven shots, hitting just one free-throw in the final five minutes while the Greyhounds went 2-for-4 from the line and nailed one more basket to earn the 60-49 victory.
Sophomore point-guard Harrington scored a career-high 20 points in the victory. She was followed in double-digits by Glessner with 12 points and seven rebounds and Scherle with 10 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Cobb added seven points and seven assists.
Gonzalez led the Pea Hens with 17 points and Tyonna Vance with 12. Shaka Cushnie and Elyse Siciliano each pulled down a team-high seven boards. The Greyhounds held SPC center Tanesha Seaton to just six points and three rebounds.
Although Saint Peter's shot 56.5% from the floor in the first half, Loyola outshot them overall 48.1% to 36.2%. The Pea Hen's hit just 8-of-35 in the second half. The Greyhounds committed just 10 turnovers and 10 fouls total in the victory.
The win was the first for three-year head coach Candy Cage over the Pea Hens.
The Greyhounds will close their regular season schedule by hosting Fairfield, Sunday, February 29 at 2:00 p.m. The contest will be the last at Reitz Arena for senior captain Lindsay Cobb.
